The American rock band Gossip, landed into the music scene in the late nineties with lead singer Beth Ditto’s distinctly powerful voice. In their track, ‘Heavy Cross’ you can find the lyric: ‘It’s a funny way to make ends meet.’

You might have heard this common English phrase before, (especially since the current news is constantly reporting the rise of inflation and the struggle with rising utility bills.) So the phrase, ‘to make ends meet,’ refers to a situation when we only have just enough money.

Other synonyms of this phrase could be: ‘to scrape by’, ‘to keep one’s head above water’ or ‘to make do.’

Examples:
“If you’re unemployed, it’s hard to make ends meet.

“I don’t know how they manage to keep their heads above water. They just survive on the minimum wage.”

“If the situation doesn’t improve, we will have to make do.”

Lyrics:

It’s a cruel, cruel world to face on your own
A heavy cross to carry along
The lights are on but everyone’s gone
And it’s cruel

It’s a funny way to make ends meet
When the lights are out on every street
It feels alright but never complete
Without joy

I checked you
If it’s already been done, undo it
It takes two
It’s up to me and you to prove it

On the rainy nights, even the coldest days
You’re moments ago but seconds away
The principal of nature, it’s true but
It’s a cruel world

We can play it safe or play it cool
Follow the leader or make up all the rules
Whatever you want, the choice is yours
So choose

I checked you
If it’s already been done, undo it
It takes two It’s up to me and you to prove it

I trust you
It’s already been done, undo it
It takes two
It’s up to me and you to prove it

I checked you
If it’s already been done, undo it
It takes two
It’s up to me and you to prove it

I trust you
